The Humber Bridge Half Marathon was established by the Rotary Club of Hull in 1998, when it was decided to stage a high profile event incorporating the magnificent setting of the Humber Bridge.
The first official race was held 12 months later, and has grown to become the biggest Rotary fundraising event in Hull and the East Riding, raising funds for charities and organisations on both sides of the river. The event is also supported by our friends from the Rotary Club of Barton Upon Humber.
A total of 1,261 runners competed in the first race, with more than 24,000 since, helping raise an estimated figure of over £500,000 for good causes. The race has previously been named by Runner’s World as one of the top 50 road races in the UK.
Organisers have been dedicated to continually improving the event for runners and spectators. People with specialist skills and knowledge have joined the race committee, ensuring the event has moved with the times. Entrants now book on line, are kept informed of key information electronically, with an updated website and an increased social media presence on Facebook and Twitter.
Race days have been improved every year, with earlier start times, chip timing and disposable tags, additional water, isotonic drink and sponge stations and more race marshals. Additional toilet facilities are now provided, an upgraded traffic management plan and improved catering have all enhanced the event.
The health and safety of all attending the event has always been a priority. The St John Ambulance area was recently moved to provide easier access, and a casualty liaison role was created.
In 2014, the event grew once again, with record numbers registered for the event, a new headline sponsor, Sargent Electrical, came on board.
We have also been delighted with the support of the HEY Smile Foundation, who have brought new energy to the event, helped raise the profile further and bring the wider recognition the event deserves.
Our partnership with the HEY Smile Foundation continues into 2017 as we strive to make the event even bigger in Hull’s UK City of Culture year. For the second year, the event’s main sponsor is Hudgell Solicitors. We’re thrilled to be working with them for the next two years on making the Humber Bridge Half Marathon the event to take part in. Sargent Electrical has also remained on board as a key partner to the event.
For 2017, we have chosen a charity theme, which is: combatting loneliness and isolation and we will shortly be inviting applications for grants of up to £2017 in this area.
All money raised after the deductions of necessary expenses go to charity. There are no paid staff at the event and everything is carried out by hard-working volunteers.
We look forward to runners raising valuable funds for many more charities this year, adding to those who have already been well supported, including HEY Smile Foundation, Marie Curie Cancer Care, Dove House Hospice, St Andrews Hospice, The Daisy Appeal, Special Olympics Swimming Gala, Faith in Education, When You Wish Upon a Star, Yorkshire Air Ambulance, Downright Special, St John Ambulance, Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen, Sea Cadets, Haiti Appeal, Hull Floods Appeal , Cash for Kids, Vision Aid , Arthritis Care, Charities of Rotary Clubs of Hull and Barton on Humber, Shelter boxes, MENCAP, Teenage Cancer Trust, the Carer’s Trust, the Butterflies Memory Loss Support Group, Mind, the Brain Tumour Charity and many more.
